Our philosophy
Set in a “classroom without walls”— the stunning, natural environment of Vancouver Island, Canada— the ICL Leadership Academy is a dynamic program where participants are introduced to the powerful idea that leadership is important, accessible, and something everyone can develop. Building on this capacity, participants learn ‘sustainable leadership’ and key skills to enable them to lead now and tomorrow.
There are three key pillars of the ICL Academy experience – Leadership, Service and Reflection. Through leadership, students will be more aware of themselves. Through service, students become more aware of others. Reflection helps the students make sense of the process of what it really means to be a leader and, in turn, how each student sees him or herself as a leader in society. Students will become more effective leaders by recognizing the impact they have on others.

Non-Traditional Leadership Skills
In a truly globalized world, a new set of skills are necessary for students to thrive. These non-traditional leadership skills are the cornerstone of the ICL Leadership Academy and include a focus on initiative, teamwork and communication. Throughout the program, intellectually and physically challenging activities encourage participants to step outside their comfort zone. During workshops, team-building exercises, games and excursions, highly trained educators will push students to reach their highest leadership potential.
A Global Network of Leaders
After two weeks, students become part of a network of service leaders from around the world and have a different understanding of themselves and their ability to ‘make service count.’ Additionally, all participants in the program have the opportunity to earn academic credit for a course in leadership and sustainability. Plus, participation in the ICL Academy helps students answer the most critical questions asked by both colleges and future employers: How are you a leader? How have you made a difference?
A Change in Mindset
The first critical juncture of this program is in the pedagogy. Theories of leadership can be taught and memorized but leader development is entirely different. It needs to deepen students’ understanding of themselves. The more participants know about themselves, the more prepared they are to lead others.
The ICL leadership Academy draws on thousands of hours of practical education and hundreds of research studies. We believe that an important part of leadership development is determining what type of leader a student is. Then, they must think of themselves as a leader in order to take advantage of leadership opportunities.
The Academy draws on university professors who have studied and taught leader development for many years; partnerships with local youth groups such as the Boys and Girls clubs; and leaders in the community who continue to lead by example and provide inspiration to others.
